Dear Rouzbeh,
I think ft_selectdata is the function you are looking for. In particular, cfg.frequency, cfg.latency and cfg.channel are configuration options you might find useful.
Good luck

I understand I can do this by formatting the time frequency data structure powspctrm field myself but was wondering if there is a quick way of doing this (or maybe there is a variable inside one of the functions that I can use as output?) that ideally doesn't involve modifying the fieldtrip functions (at least not much).
