Hi Xiao,
Maxfilter is a preprocessing step / software package for data coming from MEG systems by Elekta (fif format) (see http://www.megwiki.org/images/a/aa/MaxFilter-2.0.pdf for a description).
In short you need to run your data through the Maxfilter software (which should have been provided by Elekta) before you can do anything with it.

Subject: [FieldTrip] What's maxfilter when read .fif file
Dear all:
I use the ''ft_read_data'' code read .fif file by fieldtrip
I get the following error message:
''Maxshield data has not had maxfilter applied to it - cannot be read by fieldtrip. Apply Neuromag maxfilter before converting to fieldtrip format.''
What should I do or Is there some Matlab codes to read .fif file ?
thanks,
xiao
