A couple of years ago, I had a similar problem. Marco Kessler sent me file handling libraries that not only improve file processing, but also provide image formats. A team of programmers used Marco's libraries to write picture data managers; of course, one needs to open hundreds of files at the same time, and renderize the photographs, etc. The system is being used for over a year, by a lot of people, and there is not a single complaint, the authors told me. The same group of people also have music format file processing systems. Again, they said that there is not a single complaint. Another application is a data managing system for an internet server written in Clean and Scheme. There is an interface to SQLite, and bla, bla, bla. The thing is working for over a year in a distance learning system. Conclusion: Marco's libraries are reliable, and I strongly recommend that you use them. I could send you a copy, but I think it is better to obtain them from
 Marco Kessler. I suppose that he has a more recent version. I guess that you are curious about the other programs I told you. If you are interested in music, I can send you and address where you can get the books and the software. Unhappily, the books are not in English, and it is not very easy to read them. However, the people who wrote the books and the software are professional musicians, and the products are high quality.

Is there still a small maximum number of files that can be open at the same time?
