a) If you're doing non-graphic programming it hardly matters which toolkit 
clean is designed to interface with.  At worst you'll get the current 
situation

b) QT and GTK are both available for Solaris, and many other platforms.  They 
are not installed by default, but then neither is Clean.

BTW, I agree that providing a Linux-specific solution would be a mistake.
