The following link explains all you need to know about either implementing plugin readers for fieldtrip, or how to wrangle the numeric data into a structure that can be used for downstream processing:

The list mentioned above may not be fully exhaustive, so to be sure you could grep the fileio/private folder for occurrences of the fileformat’s extension. Also you can look into the documentation of fileio/ft_filetype to see whether your desired file format is listed.

If not, is there a way to create an empty fieldtrip data structure and then try to fill it in manually, to be able to use the ft functions later on?
