[FieldTrip] How to combine multiple topoplots in one overview figure (subplots)?

Dear Fieldtrip-users,
I am studying the effects of an intervention (brain stimulation) on TEPs and would like to create overview plots to summarize my results. Particularly, I would like to make plots with 15 topoplots (5 columns representing different time-windows, and 3 rows representing topoplots before and after the intervention and the difference). Though if I make a figure in matlab and try to plot the topoplots using ‘subplot’ they still appear in separate windows. Does anyone know how I can stop the code from making new figures every time?
I did the exact same thing a couple of years ago with a former version of fieldtrip and then it worked perfectly. I just cannot find what is going ‘wrong’ in my code this time…
All suggestions highly appreciated.
Thank you very much!
-Debby
