Hi Emmanuelle,

 " matrix to combine electrodes into channels “ means that each row in the matrix contains a set of weights that is used to linearly combine the contribution of individual electrodes - i.e. the entities that have a physical location on the scalp, and which in the original recording measure the potential difference with respect to the physical reference electrode - into the signal that is represented at the channels - i.e. the more flexible representation of the signal, after software rereferencing, independent component backprojection etc.
