PhD student on Decoding emotions from the brain, Departments of Cognitive Neuropsychology and Methodology and Statistics (1,0 fte)

Project description
Central aim of the PhD research is to decode / classify discrete categories of emotions, based on recordings of neural activity (EEG) and other physiological measures (HR, GSR, facial EMG). Emotion induction will be realized using Tilburg University’s advanced Virtual and Augmented Reality facilities. Emotion classification will be performed using state-of-the-art machine learning and data science techniques in order to optimize the sensitivity to identify and classify (differences in) emotional states.

The PhD project will be supervised by promotors prof.dr. J. Vroomen, and co-promotors dr. Katrijn van Deun and dr. Marcel C.M. Bastiaansen. A more detailed project description is available upon request from dr. Marcel Bastiaansen.

Tasks

  *   Designing and conducting research;
  *   Presenting findings on scientific conferences;
  *   Reporting findings in international journals, resulting in a dissertation;
  *   Participating in the graduate school;
  *   Participating in the teaching program of the departments.

Qualifications

  *   Master’s degree (preferably Research Master) in cognitive neuroscience or a closely related discipline;
  *   hands-on experience with EEG data analysis (preferably Fieldtrip);
  *   Fluency in spoken English and excellent writing skills in English;
  *   Programming skills (Matlab, R), and a keen interest in using advanced data analysis techniques are an important asset;
  *   Experience with VR would be helpful;
  *   Willingness and proven ability to work independently.

Terms of Employment

The appointment is intended to lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. The PhD appointment at Tilburg University begins with a period of 12 months. Continuation of the appointment with another 36 months will will be based on performance evaluation. The gross salary for the PhD position amounts € 2.191 per month in the first year, rising to € 2.801 per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week).

Department of Cognitive Neuropsychology
The Department of Cognitive Neuropsychology of Tilburg University consists of a vibrant mix of people interested in cognitive and clinical neuropsychology. Our fundamental research is focused on the integration of information from different modalities (hearing, seeing, touch) for perceiving speech, emotions, and crossmodal synchrony in the healthy population and in patient groups with autism, schizophrenia, or developmental dyslexia. We use behavioral measures and variety of psychophysical methods like eye tracking, EEG, and fMRI.  We have access to the DAF Technology Lab for creating Virtual Reality.

Department Methodology and Statistics
The Department of Methodology and Statistics is an internationally renowned group, holding several experts in data science methods, latent variable methods, psychometrics, meta-research, survey methodology, and other applied statistics fields. The department has a strong tradition of working with the other (substantive) research programs in our School. The department is part of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Tilburg University and responsible for the teaching and the research in the area of methodology and statistics for the social and behavioral sciences, the Data Science programs (including the novel joint bachelor in Data Science together with the technical university of Eindhoven), and the Liberal Arts and Science program of Tilburg University.
