Hi Rob,
What's cfg.surffile in your case? It should read 'surface_white_both'. I just updated the tutorial documentation yesterday, because the old specification: 'surface_l4_both' yielded the error you report. If you indeed use 'surface_white_both' it means we have to look into it further.
