[FieldTrip] Computing the spike triggered average LFP

I wish to plotting LFP based on spike using a program that I want to
create. and for the obtained the same graph as in the tutorial.

the problem is that I do not understand how the function
ft_spiketriggeredaverage  computes the avererage of the LFP around the
spikes,  while the spikes and LFP are recorded in the same period, and how
he detect the spike?
