[FieldTrip] WPLI question

Hi,

I have question about the WPLI: I would like to know why it can have either
positive or negative value?

It seems to me that it could be due from the relation (lagging or leading)
between two signals, but I am not sure.

Taking the absolute value of the WPLI is it a way to preserve the
'synchronization infomation' discardig which signal is leading or lagging?
