Doesn't research benefit from having a large community? I mean the more people
look at your work the better.

Opensource communities are often very good at doing the more boring work like
making packages for various distributions or helping newbies (like me).

Your right.
To sum it up, I can see no reason why research and an active opensource
project can't coexist nicely. In fact, I think the two can complement
eachother.
