Four STAFF positions available in Informatics, NIJMEGEN University,
NL
============================================================================

The Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Informatics at the University of
Nijmegen educates students in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics
and Computer Science. The Faculty is located at the edge of the city,
looking out over the woods that stretch from Nijmegen to the German
Reichswald. Nijmegen itself is a pleasant small town (approximately
150,000 inhabitants) with a long history, situated on a moraine
overlooking the Waal river.

The sub-faculty of Informatics (http://www.cs.kun.nl/)consists of four
research groups:
- Information Retrieval and Information Systems (IRIS),
- Software Technology (ST),
- Informatics for Technical Applications (ITA)
- Foundations (F).
The central research theme of the sub-faculty is

"Quality of Software, Formal Methods and Tools"

(see http://www.cs.kun.nl/csi/profiel/). Partly due to the relatively
small number of students, the staff members of the sub-faculty have much
time for research.

The sub-faculty of Informatics started a new curriculum in 2000-2001 in
Information Science. In this curriculum, the emphasis is on the
connections between humans, organizations and informatics, focusing on
communication, ergonomics and alignment. The curriculum offers
opportunities for specializing in Medicine, Linguistics and Natural
Sciences. Other possibilities for specialization are being considered.
The central research theme of Information Science is the effective
specification of applications, not only from the informatics perspective
but especially also from the human and organizational
perspective.Information Science offers many opportunities for new and
innovative research, and has a multidisciplinary character.

To expand the staff of the sub-faculty, there are four new positions
available, two in the research group IRIS and two in the research group
ST. The last two in particular are aimed at strengthening the research
and education in Information Science.

Research group ST
-----------------
The research group ST focuses primarily on the development of
programming methods, programming languages and programming tools for the
construction of reliable software. The group studies the applicability
of functional languages in various domains (using the programming
language Clean, developed by the ST group itself), the design and
implementation of reusable software components (generic programming,
dynamic components, graphical user interfaces) and the reliability of
software components (uniqueness types, environments for integrated proof
and program development).

Associate professor (Universitair Hoofddocent) ST (position 32-01)

Assistant professor (Universitair Docent) ST (position 33-01)

Within the research group ST, there are positions for an Associate
Professor and an Assistant Professor in Information Science that have
affinity with the research of the ST group. The research of both
candidates should be directed towards executable specification
languages. An important focus of this research is integrated
specification environments that can easily be adapted to a specific
domain of application. Graphical representations and visual programming
tools play an important role here. On the one hand, the specifications
should stay close to the standard formulations of the application domain
but on the other hand they should serve as a basis for an efficient
implementation. The associate professor is expected to make essential
contributions to the research of ST. The research will mainly be in the
field of Information Science, but the candidate is expected to have an
open eye for the connections with research in Informatics.

Research Group IRIS
-------------------
The research group IRIS focuses on the development and application of
formal methods for the specification, design, analysis, exploration and
validation of information systems, varying from traditional database
systems to search-systems on the internet. In the specification phase,
syntactic methods are used to determine the shape and the contents of
the application domain. To optimize the actual effectivity of such
systems, it is required that they are well-adapted to the human and
organizational context in which they will work.

Associate professor (Universitair Hoofddocent) IRIS (position 30-01)

Assistant professor (Universitair Docent) IRIS (position 31-01)

Within the research group IRIS, there are positions for an Associate
Professor and an Assistant Professor. For both positions we seek
candidates with a proven affinity with the research of the IRIS group,
with a special emphasis on the area of Mining Systems. This area focuses
on the automatic derivation of structures and relations out of data
sources, which can be multi-medial. This is viewed as the basic
technology for information retrieval systems. Special attention is paid
both to content (to be able to give good characterizations of the data
sources) and to structural aspects (for example to derive a conceptual
model of the internal connections).

The associate professor is expected to make essential contributions to
the research of the IRIS group. The research will mainly be in the field
of Informatics, but the candidate is expected to also have an open eye
for the connections with research in Information Science.
