<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">You are cordially invited to make a contribution to a <span class="">special</span> <span class="">issue</span> of Brain-Computer Interfaces (<a href="http://tinyurl.com/BCIjournal" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/BCIjournal</a>), entitled “<span class="">Affective</span> Brain-Computer Interfaces”. The <span class="">special</span> <span class="">issue</span> is a follow-up to the
 successful 3rd aBCI workshop held at the ACII conference in Geneva, in September 2013 (<a href="http://hmi.ewi.utwente.nl/abci2013" target="_blank">http://hmi.ewi.utwente.nl/abci2013</a>). But, this Call is open for every researcher working in the field of <span class="">affective</span> brain-computer interfacing and interested to contribute.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"><span class="">Affective</span> BCI aims at the detection of <span class="">affective</span>
 states, such as emotions or moods, from neuro-physiological signals. 
Such systems, allowing users to control computer games by their 
emotions, support relaxation training,
 or trigger your alarm clock during a shallow sleep stage have been 
proposed, implemented, and sold. Moreover, the affordable hardware and 
software tools also encouraged artists to play with the idea of a direct
 access to people's most private information:
 their <span class="">affective</span> and cognitive states. From 
these explorations followed a number of interesting installations, 
suggesting novel ways of human-computer as well as human-human 
interaction: encouraging <span class="">affective</span> self-reflection, the synchronization and empathizing
 between or the competition of different minds, and the collaborative creation and manipulation of digital multimodal content.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">This <span class="">special</span> <span class="">issue</span>
 on aBCI explores the current possibilities and limitations of using 
neuro-physiological signals as a modality for the recognition of <span class="">affective</span>/cognitive
 states, and looks at visions for the use of this
 information about the user state in applications for domains like 
health, arts, and entertainment. We are seeking theoretical, 
methodological, and empirical papers dealing with different topics that 
include, but are not limited to:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">- novel methods and protocols for <span class="">affective</span>/cognitive
 state induction and data collection for aBCI, addressing challenges 
such as generalization/specificity of mental state classification;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">- the detection of <span class="">affective</span>/cognitive states via neurophysiological activity;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">- the incorporation of 
additional modalities, such as physiological sensors, video, or audio, 
to support the aBCI calibration and validation;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">- innovative concepts for communication or adaptive interfaces using aBCI.</span></p>
