[FieldTrip] Looking for two postdoctoral fellows in Montreal

We, Dr. Birgit Frauscher and Dr. Christophe Grova, are happy to announce a two postdoctoral positions ( 1 fellow with biomedical engineering background / 1 fellow MD neurologist / epileptologist) available in our labs, the Analytical Neurophysiology lab (Anphy Lab) located both at the Montreal Neurological Institute (McGill University, Montreal, Canada) and at Duke University (Durham, North Carolina), as well as in the Multimodal Functional Imaging Lab located both at Concordia University (PERFORM Centre / School of Health) and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at McGill University. The fellows will be mainly based at McGill University,  will join a multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to get involved in projects involving multimodal data acquisitions and advanced analyses (EEG/MEG, high density EEG, intracranial EEG) for applications in epilepsy presurgical mapping and sleep studies.

Position 1:  We are looking for a postdoctoral fellowship,  a MD candidate (neurologist) with previous training in epileptology and neurophysiology (EEG / intracranial EEG). The candidate should be fluent in English (and if possible French) due to the patient population studied. First the candidate will be involved in further development of the atlas of normal intracranial EEG data developed by the team of Dr. Frauscher (see for instance Von Ellenrieder et al. Annals in Neurology 2020
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31777112/). Since we are currently expanding the atlas involving new centers in this multicentric study, the first objective will consist in phenotyping our growing data base of intracranial EEG data (e.g. identifying epileptic / normal channels, marking the seizure onset zone, sleep scoring). Secondly, the candidate will also be involved in the analysis of non-invasive high-density scalp EEG recording and will be trained to perform advanced source imaging developed in the lab. of Dr. Grova. The candidate will join a team of engineers and methodologists who will provide access in 3D reconstruction of the generators of EEG/MEG signals and methods to assess multimodal concordances between bioelectrical neuronal signals and hemodynamic processes (see for instance Abdallah et al Neurology 2022: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35473762/). The candidate will be involved in our objective to develop simultaneous recordings of MEG or high-density EEG data together with intracranial EEG data in epilepsy patients, providing a unique framework to validate the accuracy of source imaging techniques. This will be a multicentric project involving data acquisitions both at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre of the Montreal Neurological Institute and at the Duke University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, therefore maximizing patient numbers.

Applicants must have their degree in neurology to be considered as postdoctoral fellow by the University and are required to have demonstrated clinical expertise in epileptology and electrophysiology. Applicants should have excellent organizational skills, an aptitude for teamwork, and good writing skills. A productive publication record as well as experience in the use EEG/MEG software (Brainstorm, MNE python or fieldtrip) will constitute an asset.

Position 2: We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with solid engineering background and expertise in EEG/MEG source modeling, to join our team to get involved in advanced development of source localization techniques, contribution to our Maximum Entropy on the Mean package https://neuroimage.usc.edu/brainstorm/Tutorials/TutBEst, evaluation of source localization methods for resting state connectivity and advanced computational modeling. In close collaboration with the epilepsy team of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Duke University, the fellow will have access to MEG, high density EEG and intracranial EEG recordings of epilepsy patients, aiming at developing and validating methods localizing epileptic discharges (spikes, seizures) but also studying ongoing resting state patterns (see for instance, Afnan et al 2023 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37149236/, Avigdor et al Clin. Neurophysiology 2021 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33450578/). One of the main objectives will be to develop simultaneous recordings of MEG or high-density EEG data together with intracranial EEG data in epilepsy patients, providing a unique framework to validate the accuracy of source imaging techniques, during epileptic discharges but also functional connectivity patterns during resting state. This will be a multicentric project involving data acquisitions both at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre of the Montreal Neurological Institute and at the Duke University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, therefore maximizing sampling size. From a methodological point of view, an objective will consist in adding anatomical models of deep subcortical structure in the EEG/MEG head models to improve source imaging accuracy within deep seated regions.


Applicants must have a PhD (or close to completion) in a related field (e.g., neurosciences, computer science, biomedical engineering, physics). Applicants should have strong knowledge of Matlab and or Python and/or experience in analysis of neuroimaging, excellent organizational skills, an aptitude for teamwork, good writing skills and a productive publication record. Experience in one or more aspects of the research themes and EEG/MEG software (Brainstorm, MNE python or fieldtrip) will constitute an asset.
